1914 Charlotte Oeschlagel PHOTO Germany
Description: Born in 1898, Charlotte was first recognized as a musical prodigy, appearing at age 7 with the Berlin Philharmonic. She was cast into Ice Ballets at the Admiral Platz in Berlin at age 10. The ballets were a combination of theatrical pantomime and musical comedies. Considered the first great SHOW skater, she was recruited by promoter Charles Dillingham in 1914 to bring a small troup of 20 German ladies of the ice to perform at the Hippodrome in New York City. They gave 425 performances in 300 days, setting a new theater record for the time. She was the first skater to appear in white boots, the first lady to land an axel, and she used a skirt that shockingly 'just barely covered' her knees. She was the first skater to appear in movies, starring in a 1914 six reeler, "Frozen Warning", which was about a Vassar College skater who alerted authorities to the presence of SPIES, by tracing the word in the ice !! Why SPIES were attending a Vassar College skating party is a subject for someones PHD dissertation!! While skating Carnivals and touring itinerant shows had been around since 1879 (see Jackson Haines - Grand Carnival), in 1924 the USFSA organized a National Skating Carnival for three years in New York City, and Charlotte appeared. About this time she added what was to become her trademark move, the Charlotte Stop (Back spiral with legs in perpendicular position to the ...

Haymarket Martyrs' Monument
Description: From the National Park Service: Historians consider Haymarket one of the seminal events in the history of American labor. On May 1, 1886, close to 300000 strikers nationwide and 40000 in Chicago took part in demonstrations for the eight-hour day. This movement was part of an intern national struggle for workers' rights, and the heart of the movement was in Chicago, where the anarchist International Working Peoples' Association (IWPA) played a central role in organizing the May Day strikes. On May 4, members of the IWPA organized a rally at Haymarket Square to protest police brutality against striking workers on the South Side. As the last speaker finished his remarks, police marched in and demanded an end to the gathering. Then an unknown assailant threw a bomb into the crowd, killing and wounding several police officers and protesters. Police apprehended eight anarchists on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. The trial and subsequent execution of four of the men--Albert Parsons, August Spies, Adolf Fischer, and George Engel--has served as enduring symbol of labor's struggles for justice. The importance of recognizing Haymarket's national significance for labor history forced us to select a suitable site to preserve as a National Landmark. The site of the Haymarket meeting and bombing, in Haymarket Square on the corner of Des Plaines Avenue and Randolph Street, lacks physical integrity, as a result of the construction of the Kennedy Expressw ay in the 1950s.
